The Child Mental Health Charter Pledge

On 12th December 2019 a Conservative Government was elected with an overall majority to serve a full term.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson immediately vowed to lead a ‘People’s Government’ delivering ‘the people’s priorities.’

A new Mental Health Act with children’s needs at its heart is an urgent priority.

Poor mental health wrecks children’s lives.

New legislation will change them and help to build a productive and healthy society for the benefit of everybody.

On 29th October 2019, the Child Mental Health Charter was launched in the House of Commons at a meeting addressed by Mental Health Minister, Nadine Dorries.

Its Six Principles must underpin a new Mental Health Act that:

  • Focuses on children’s needs
  • Protects children
  • Invests in a properly qualified workforce
  • Invests in policies informed by the best available evidence
  • Focuses on the needs of parents/carers
  • Makes policies work

We ask you to support the Charter; to ask the Prime Minister to make a new Mental Health Act with children’s needs at its heart a top priority and to support a full Public Consultation on the recommendations in the Wessely Review of the 2017 Mental Health Green Paper.

We look forward to working with you during the course of the forthcoming parliament to achieve these aims.
